Have you ever had one of those days where EVERYTHING happens at once?
You know the one’s. None of it is really bad stuff, it’s just that it all happens at once and you want to run screaming away from everything you know and love, and find a small corner of the world where you can just be alone for 5 minutes!
That was yesterday for me.
The little nit picking things like car problems, house problems, health problems, work issues and ignorant strangers and road rage drivers all just pile on top of each other.
I’m usually pretty good at blocking things out when I need to, but you can only block them out for so long before your mind snaps. LOL Well, I snapped last night. At work. And it was only about 15 minutes into my shift.
My day had just been one of those bad ones and I actually thought work would be a good escape for me. I love talking to people and hearing about their lives and their stories. I tell my stories on paper, I don’t need to tell all my customers, I tell the whole world instead! J Anyway, when one of my customers snapped at me, treating me like a trained dog, as they sometimes do when they’ve had too much to drink, I snapped back. And everything boiled over.
I’m half Italian and half Irish; I have a bit of a temper. Over the years I’ve learned to control it pretty well, but sometimes it just blows. Trembling is the first sign it’s gonna go. Then tears. When I stalked away from this customer before I could brain him my tray I was losing it…and I knew it. One of my co-workers looked at me and asked if I was all right. “No!” I said and kept walking. She left me for a minute, and then followed, and she gave me a hug and all my anger turned to tears. I just lost it. She just kept talking and made me laugh then smile. She didn’t ask any questions or try to figure out what was wrong, she was just there. She took off her coat (she was done work for the day and was on her way home) and went into the bar to cover for me for a few minutes so I could catch my breath.
This is a woman I’ve worked opposite of (she works days…I work nights) for almost two years, yet we aren’t what you would call friends. But she was a really good friend to me when I needed one.
It sorta made all the bad shit fade away to know that there are still some people out there that care. And that’s just it…she cared. Whether it was me, or someone else that was losing it…it didn’t matter. It restored a bit of my balance to know that although there are a lot of assholes out there, there are also nice people too.
Ya know?
That’s why I’m SO glad I don’t work in the service industry anymore. Ya know? I worked at Fazoli’s, and MAN, customers there treat you like trash. They assume that you work at a fast food restaurant because you’re an idiot or something.
Kinda amusing when you shock an Argentinian family by greeting them in Spanish–or someone realizes that you’re telling them how much change they’ll get before the cash register has time to calculate it!
I think that EVERYONE should be required to work in a service job for at least 1 year.
Anyhow, have you heard? I finalled in the Golden Heart! Pretty cool, huh???
That is Fantastic News . Congratulations Lydia!! I’m so happy for you! 😀
As for the service industry..I don’t usually let it get to me. People have a bad day and they take it ouut on whoever they can..usually their waitress/gas jockey/ store clerk. But man, when I"m having a bad day who do I get to take it out on!
 My characters….no sex for them…if I’m having a bad day..so are they! :hehe:
HA! That’s one way to do it.
Is that why I’m so horrible to my characters? In The Duke’s Bargain, the total is 2nd degree burns, broken ankle, and concussion. In In Love and War’s rewrite, it’s already a whole lot of bruises and scratches, a concussion, and a sliced hand, and I’m only 60 pages in…
