I’ve done nothing but write for four days, and I feel great!
Ok, I did go to the gym, and I did go see the movie BEWITCHED (was only ok) but that’s because my brain needed a break too. But, all in all, I wrote.
All the writing I did these past few days has really made it clear how little writing I’ve done in the past months or so. Why haven’t I been writing? I’ve been promoting.
Don’t get me wrong. I’ve enjoyed it all. I’m not one of those authors that hates promotion, that can’t talk about themselves or their stories comfortably. I mean, look at me, I get on here almost every day and talk about ME and my stories…well ok, and sex, and men, and bartending….but those are all part of ME.;)
But the big epiphany I had this weekend was that getting back into actually writing after some time away from it is like getting back into the gym after two weeks off. HELL!
You see, I’ve never been the type of writer than can sit down and write on a schedule. I know I need to master this to a certain extent if I want to turn this into a full time career, but a ‘certain extent’ will be as far as I get. I thrive under pressure. I’ve learned that if you give me a deadline I can turn my brain off, and kick the muses shapley ass until he co-operates and gives me a story.
I think that while I was working on website updates, doing chats and author days, my muse was out partying it up and he did not want to come back. So I challenged my friend Beth to a free write. 30 mins, whoever writes the most words wins. This is the second time we’ve done this. (She won the first time), and she whooped my butt again!! She did almost 1400 words!
Beth is the “Iron Pen” Champion.
But, I got into my characters head for the first time(and realized what a bastard he can be) in this WIP and that’s enough for me.
So what do you do when your writing has stalled? How do you kick start it again after a holiday or time away? I’ll probably need more tricks in the future, I might get sick of Beth beating me. 😛
I know I said it before, but I promise myself that all I have to do is write 500 words. That seems to work for me.
I don’t even want to think about how much writing I HAVENT done this year. Last year I wrote and polished a WIP in 2.5 months. This year I have yet to finish ONE!
The best thing I can do is unplug myself from the internet (I can hear steph screaming LOL). I just get more done that way.
It must be something in the air. I’ve been writing too. And my head is clogged with ideas. Sometimes I have to stop working on the story I’m in, to write something from another story. :hehe:
I wish this was my problem Sasha. Right now, my biggest dilemma is finding the time to fit in my writing. I find myself at work thinking about my hero – not good standing in front of a bunch of horny teenagers I know. Now I just need to get off my behind and submit but grrr, those synopses are my downfall
