So, I’m not a huge country music fan but I do like some people/groups. The Dixie Chicks are a group that I’ve liked, but not enough to buy one of their cd’s. In fact, I was completely oblivious to the controversy of the lead singers “statement” at a London concert. I can remember a while ago seeing something about their “controversy” but I didn’t bother to look it up on the internet or pay much attantion. Anyway, their song Not Ready To Make Nice caught my attention. I bought it from iTunes and even though I didn’t know what was going on, I loved the song.
It sounds like something I would say when angry, and hurt. Well, the sentiment is one I’ve had, but the song says it much better than I would. Anyway, I saw a promo for Oprah yesterday where the Dixie Chicks were going to be on today, so I watched it. I have to say it. Now I’m gonna run out and buy their cd for sure. Not because I like the single or because I’ve liked some of their music before, or because I agree with what lead singer Natalie Maines said, but because I do believe they have the right to voice an opinion.
People, famous or not, have a right to voice opinions. There are people all over the place saying worse, and doing a lot worse. Now, I’m not a US Citizen, and I’m certainly not a political activist, but as a person who likes to write what I want, I think supporting this is worthwhile. I plan to see the documentary SHUT UP AND SING as well.
So, have any of you followed this since it happened? Anyone have an opinon?
Personally, I can’t stand the Dixie Chicks. I didn’t like them BEFORE the controversy. I’m all for speaking up, but I haven’t been impressed with how they’ve gone about it, so now I like them even less…
For me, it was the way the said it on teh taping of the concert. It showed the concert video of her saying what she said, and it looked like a casual thing. Not like she was trying to make a huge statement, but it looked like exactly what she said it was. Them trying to show that even though they’re there to perform, that their mind is on, and they do care about what was going on in the world.
And while I also think that anyone and everyone has the right to disagree, or boycott them, Some of the video clips and levels of violence seemed a bit much. I’m hoping the documentary will show a more clear picture. But really, I guess it depends on who made the movie.
well i never did like the dixi chicks, not because therecountry, i listen to some country. but i dont like them because they actuaaly think they s%!t dont stink. when they first started out with there first albume no talk show wanted to book them n the only show who did was the VIEW back like 9 years ago. now with this albume all the talk shows want them and the “VIEW also and u know what they said. we will never do the view, do u see garth brooks doing the VIEW?. boy when barbara walters n the other ladys heard that they got real mad. so they went off n pulled out an old tape of the show n they were on the show. that one song u say about it is nice i do get it, but dixi chicks dont look down on the show that made u who u r today. with what they said about bush i have nothing to say about it because everyone has there opinion n there rights to say what ever they want is a free country.
boy do i rant sorry about that lol.
I enjoy the Dixie Chicks and I know that eventually I’ll be buying the CD. I love the way they sound.
The whole controversy just boggles my mind. I notice that many (not all so please don’t jump on me and attack …. well actually attack away *g* I’m good at ignoring LOL) Americans TALK all about their rights to free speech … but I wonder about the truth to that right. As soon as someone says something like this a mob goes after them.
I’ve deleted many things here *g* So many thoughts going through the brain and so much difficulty filtering them so they make sense without me sounding like a right royal bitch. I’ll stop now. (I’m shaking my head in wonder at the stupidity of it though)
:batman: Hate to buck the system, but I Iove, love, love The Dixie Chicks. I am by no means a country music lover. It takes a lot of moxie to take that polical stand, however, and for them to tell it like they think it is? COURAGE is a word I use when I talk about them. So what if I don’t like to hear a banjo – their harmony is sweet.
It helps that they record their music at a friend’s studio. And that I don’t judge them for what they think. “Wide Open Spaces” is an awesome song (written by Susan Gibson). I say let people be who they are, and let the correctness police get in line behind the other PO’d folks.
Me? I’ll be hanging out with the fun crowd…
