“The door to your cage is open. All you have to do is walk out…if you dare.”
This is so true. There is so much out there in the world, and I don’t mean in foreign countries or far away places, but right outside your door…be it in a small town, or a big city…there is so much for all of us to experience, to live, to feel, to breathe. Yet, it’s so easy to get sucked into the daily grind, and forget what LIVING is all about. To sit at our computers and live in the worlds we create. Or for others to get wrapped up in those 12 hour days at the office where they stress and struggle to make a buck so they can buy that fancy car or designer suit.
I try very often to remind myself that there is so much more to LIFE than these things. Sometimes, all it takes to remind me of this is the sight of a young person eagerly and energetically embracing everything that life throws in his path.
I heard a quote somewhere that “There are no new stories, only old ones, retold.” And while I agree that some writers do retell different versions of similar stories…I don’t believe that ALL writers do that. I personally believe that in order to be a writer, the kind of writer I want to be, that I need to live life. I need to experience it, the pain and the pleasure, the boring and the exciting. I need to interact with people. Because there, when I’m doing that…I’m getting inspiration for NEW stories. That’s one of the things I love about being a bartender…I get to talk to all kinds…and I never forget that it takes all kinds to make the world go ’round.
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson ~
BRAVO!!! What a great post sweetie.
I think most Story Lines have been told, but not every story. The true essence (for me) of a good story is not in the outcome of the story line, but in the journey to get to the end. What emotions does the story teller arise within me? Is the "message" relayed to me. Do I visualize the sunset, Do I sympathize with the pain. To me these are what make me want to read, and reread a story, not boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, boy loses girl, boy fights to win back girl….
They say there’s nothing new under the universe, but I’m not sure that’s true. I do agree with Shayne that what makes the difference is the journey. Carpe diem! 🙂
Sahyne~ I agree witht hat about the storylines. I guess one of the things I’m trying to say is, I think it’s easy for a writer to forget about the story and focus on the story line when they lock themselves up away from the world. In order to write about life, they need to experience life, and not just readothers stories.
The same as it’s important for others to realize that living life, is more than going to work everyday and having the "right" material things. People need to remember that a key part of life is living and experienceing it.
Am I making any sense?
I know a guy that lives in my small town, while everyone else is getting a colege degree he drives a potatoe chip truck, and makes a good income, he bought a house a few years ago. And if you ask him what he does for a living he will tell you he will flash that great smile of his and tell you he works for LAYS. 😀
